time lapse tuesday: the gallery wall

One of my favorite things to do, I know not why, is to snap the same photo at different times - sometimes it's to get a "before and after" effect, sometimes it's as simple as different times of the day to get different light, sometimes it's different times of the year to see seasonal transformations, and sometimes it's different years at the same location (as with the Aruba family photos - or even our past christmas card shots that I shared last month showing the little ladybugs growing up over the last 10 years) - clearly, there's something about "time lapse" (if that's even the right word) photography that intrigues me. If you don't believe me, just take a look at the stairwell leading down to the playroom, I've turned it into a black & white gallery wall filled with time lapse photos the whole way down ...

I was careful to record the year on each one by writing with pencil on the mat that surrounds each photo - I'm so glad I did that, it gets fuzzy after a few years pass by! You might recognize our last 6 christmas card photos in the lower left corner (converted to black and white) - here they are close up:

I jazzed these mats up by using a red pen for the year and I even drew a sprig of holly next to it - I like how that helps quickly ID them as having been a christmas card photo. On the opposite wall is my favorite of all the time lapse photos - these are the "4-generations" photos we took each summer from 1999-2005 ...

It's my grandmother, my mother, myself, and the 2 ladybugs in each photo. After 2005, my grandmother was too frail to sit through these photo sessions so, knowing that there won't be any more, you better believe how much I cherish these special pictures! Extra points for anyone who noticed the girls' growth tick marks on the door jam ;-)

Once you're down in the playroom, my time lapse obsession extends into framed school projects - for example, the self-portraits that each ladybug did on her first day of 2nd grade:

How cute is that? I mean, please, what mother doesn't love a child's self portrait?!

Anyway, I just thought this time lapse theme was somewhat of a noteworthy quirk of mine! I have enough material to start a series of sorts ... not enough material to share something every Tuesday, but from time to time I thought I'd pull out something from my iphoto folders and share a small "time lapse Tuesday" story with you ... I hope you'll stay tuned ...

Great post Sloan! I love that you have so many time lapse photos. I am cracking up at your girls' 2nd grade self portraits! Your girls artwork is awesome! I'm laughing b/c my son is in 2nd grade and he can barely draw a stick figure! If I had him do a self portrait...it would for sure be in pencil only! The funny part is he thinks he's a pretty good artist!

oh I love this Sloan! Your photos look fabulous but my fave are the self portraits! Did you use Deep Space Sparkle by chance? Love that site..my kids did theirs this past summer and they look similar!

I wish I was this creative with pictures on the wall. I vow to be better, and thanks for your inspiration.
No kids' art on the walls. My kids are kind of art-limited, to put it nicecly.

you are too organized. . .at least in the photo area. . .see we all have our strengths and photos and photo organization is not mine!!

We have our kids art work hanging up in our basement too. It just makes me smile!

BTW Jake was pretty upset on Sunday. There was a lot of pillow throwing and stomping out of the room. I think he would have handled it better if the Pats hadn't beaten themselves. . .it was like they just didn't come to play. And no, no way, no how will he root for the Packers. His Dad is a Bears fan, so at least one man in the house is happy.

I LOVE those self portraits. My mom has some hanging in her office of my sister and I, and they are still my favorites.

The time lapse photo idea is so awesome. I want to do that. I LOVE that so much!

I had to come back and tell you this story. Almost 20 years ago I was in Cancun with my best friend. She saw a cute guy and told me to snap her picture with him, it was literally the moment they met. (he was there from fall river, massachusetts). Anyway, long story short, they married, went back there for their honeymoon and have a photo in the exact spot where they met. Years later they now have a photo in the same spot with their 3 kids! love it!

Your gallery wall is gorgeous!!!
I love seeing all of those sweet baby faces staring at me all day. Brings me way back and makes me feel a whole lot younger!!:)
Those self portraits are just the cutest too. I have been thinking of doing some to hang above their coat hooks in the laundry room. I seriously need to get my act together.....!!!:)
Enjoy the night

Is it my imagination or are things looking a bit different around this little blog of yours?!?!
A picture header from Picasa in your future!!!:)

Sloane,
I love this and have always wanted to do it, but now to try and find the old photos is overwhelming. I too love putting up the kids art work too. These portraits are great. They say people will know what is important to you within the first minute of entering your house.
I'd say Family is loud and clear here.
