so what's the deal with ...

... toilet paper these days?!

Anyone else noticing the huge difference in size here?  Last week, I inadvertently purchased a different brand of tp (Northern instead of Charmin), I was in a rush and was wooed by a promotional markdown ... but when I got home to put the rolls away with my existing rolls I noticed the huge size difference - so much smaller!  In fact, these newer rolls are so skinny from side to side they even look ridiculous on the fixture ...

Not only do they look ridiculous, but I'm especially bothered by the fact that the folks at Northern think it's ok to quietly reduce the size (yet ask the same price) without anyone noticing ... what?!  And you know who else is guilty of the same?  Kraft mac and cheese ... okay, I know I shouldn't even admit to being familiar with this horrible chemical-laden brand of neon-orange "food", but that's beside the point ... they too have reduced the portion size of their boxes and significantly so with their "branded" boxes (Cars, Scooby Doo, Sponge Bob, etc) ... see for yourself ...

OK, I guess it's tough to see the fine print at the bottom, but what used to be a regular 8-oz package has been reduced to 7.25-oz and the one on the left with the special pasta shapes is down to a measly 5.5-oz ... this is ridiculous!  Not to mention a complete rip-off ... grrr ... i feel totally hoodwinked!  bamboozled!  These corporate games are so aggravating ... anyone remember the grocery store rant that Steve Martin went on in Father of the Bride over the hot dog packs vs. the bun packs?  yeah ... that's totally me right now ...

Anyone with me on this?!  I wish I had the time to get all postal on these giant companies and complain, but instead I'll just rant here and try to let it go ... deep breath, momma ladybug ... deeeeep breath ...

Oh gosh, don't get me started on TP. I hate buying it, it's so expensive. I hate to say I get it at Dollar Tree now. I only put the good stuff out when we have guests. :) AND yes, I have noticed it's smaller. What really annoys me is Hellman's used to have 16 oz in their small mayo, which is exactly what I need for a dressing recipe I have. Now it's 15 oz, which means I have to buy the large container, and then measure it in my Pyrex mixing cup. I have noticed MANY products that have kept the same price, but lowered the amount that they give you. They think we don't notice. :)) You can tell this topic gets me going. I feel you on this one my friend.

I hear you Sloan!! I buy cheap toilet paper (Scotts) b/c it seems to last us longer. This summer when we were at my in-laws Brady said to me- grandma and grandpa must be rich...they have really nice toilet paper! Anyway, things are getting smaller and costing more. They must think we're really dumb or something??? Maybe you could come up with a "template" letter that we could all print and send to these companies?! :)

I've become the toliet paper nazi around here. For some reason, it feels like there is always TP on the floor of the girls bathroom, what are they doing with it I ask you? And, its like gold. ..not to be wasted on the floor!

And the Potato chip thing, The kids and I have actually started joking about how empty the bags are!

I would rather pay a bit more and know I was getting the same amount I used to get!

I noticed the downsizing on peanut butter from Costco. I had existing bottles on the shelf, and the new ones were markedly smaller. Stupid manufacturers.

How I missed your last post I don't know. I have been meaning to respond to your email all week, but with my computer keyboard down, I've had to rely on already drafted posts for my blog. I finally have a keyboard today, so I'm catching up.

About sugar--it is a beast, truly. I don't know what the solution is, but I've been sugar free (not Nazi level, but avoiding treats, etc.) since November 1st. I've decided that I can have one-two days a month where I can have whatever I want, but the days have to be determined on the first. I'm holding out for Thanksgiving/Black Friday. And December will be Christmas Eve/Day. January will be a birthday, whatever. I am anxious to look into a few of those books you've mentioned. And there has to be a long-term solution. When we find it, we need to share it.

Good luck, and don't buy hot dogs!

I've also noticed that toilet paper keeps getting more and more expensive. And, what can we do about it? It's not like we can stop buying it. (Although I recently saw 2 blog posts about 'family cloth' aka re-usable toilet paper. Um. No thanks.)

OK...now strangely I had noticed the OPPOSITE to be true of TP. It seems like they've all started making "jumbo" rolls and those mammoths are too fat for my tp holder. I buy the BJ's brand of tp. Much cheaper and not the flimsy one-ply sandpaper crap either.

Now I will say I did notice the mac and cheese shapes boxes seem to have nothing in them and, I'm with Cindy...WTF on selling less than one gallon cartons of Breyer's?!?!?
