goodbye, sweet gigi ...

yesterday morning i got the call i'd been dreading for at least the last two years ... my wonderful grandmother had died just 30 minutes earlier.  she had been sliding ever so slowly towards death over these last several years - the slippery slope of dementia had crept in and slowly taken the vibrant grandmother i had always known ... so it was surely time.  fortunately, she passed away peacefully and unafraid - and in her own home.  so we have much to be thankful for.

and yet as expected as it was, i still can't quite wrap my arms around it.  as i sat right here in this spot writing a glowing happy post about our new puppy, my 92-year-old grandmother breathed her last breath and left this earth.

i'll miss her so very much.

she was my namesake - sloan was her maiden name.  she was born in 1919 while her father was fighting WWI.  she was the youngest of of nine children, some of whom did not live to adulthood, as was not uncommon at the time.  and among the siblings who made it, they all died young by today's standards - no doubt, the result of the heavy drinking and smoking that was the norm for that generation.  but not my gigi.  she outfoxed them all ...

circa 1923

she was much more than a grandmother to me ... thanks to an acrimonious divorce between my parents when i was very young, my grandmother became a second mother to me.  and for a good chunk of time after my parents split when i was barely five, my two-parent family consisted of my mom and grandmother ...

i was so lucky to have such a special relationship with her - i clearly remember so many wonderful times spent with her ... as a child, i remember her creativity - we made dolls from clothespins, we made fairy houses long before the book series, and countless other clever crafts.  at our sleepovers, i recall saying our prayers together as she tucked me in at night.  in my teenage years, we had traveling, shopping, vacations, graduations, you name it.  living so far from home in my married years has been tough, but we did our best and my girls adored her ... their special "gigi" (GG, short for great-greandmother).

i am so very grateful that my daughters were able to know her so well ... i'm hoping that they'll remember the same vibrant, funny, beautiful woman that i adored ...

this was right before getting tucked in - prayers included ;-)

'guess who?' and 'go fish' were perpetual favorites ...

above is gigi's legacy ... 2 daughters, 6 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.  what a gift her life was.
goodbye, sweet gigi, you will be missed more than my words could ever say ...

bar mitzvah-ing ...

i was recently lamenting the fact that my big ladybug is really growing up ... suddenly i turned around and my baby had turned a corner.  i remember when group photos with her classmates looked like this ...

big ladybug in yellow ...

but this past weekend, the photos looked like this ...

big ladybug on far left side ...

not sure where the time in between those two photos went, but it was a very big weekend for my big ladybug.  her first formal event on her own.  she had a late afternoon 'prep party' with the above girls ... giggling and getting ready with the radio blasting - hair, nails, makeup and photos at her friend's home while the moms lamented over a glass of wine downstairs.  then it was off to the temple to her first bar mitzvah ceremony, followed by a trolley ride for all the kids to a nearby golf club for a full dinner and dancing party afterwards with a midnight pickup time ... wow ...

it literally takes my breath away to see her this way ... and i'm truly so very proud of the beautiful young woman she is growing to be ...

will the ladybug ever get her groove back?

i just can't seem to find my blogging groove after this summer's long hiatus ... the habit of coming here and sitting down to 'journal' my days seems to have left me and i'm not really sure why ... is it because i can't find the time?  yes.  is it because there's really nothing all that interesting to say?  yes.  is it because i'm in that school-routine rut that dogs me several times a year?  yes.

but that's actually about to change.  like this weekend.  i'll have nothing but news starting next week!  this weekend is one of those monster weekends that we've been anticipating for quite some time.  initially, the date was circled because saturday will mark my big ladybug's very first bar mitzvah.  a black-tie evening bar mitzvah with an all-night dinner/dancing party at a country club afterwards.  without her parents with her.  pick up isn't until midnight (gasp!).  this will be the first formal event she's attended as a 'big girl' - and she absolutely. can't. wait.  the dress.  the hair.  the makeup.  the tiny kitten heels.  what a big day for her - i see the anticipation in her eyes, in her giggly conversations with her girlfriends, in her focus ... and i'm so happy for her.  of course, as you read in my previous post about letting go, this will be a bittersweet night for me - i'll just have to swallow the lump in my throat and beam with pride over my beautiful budding teenager ... because truly, i really am so so happy for her!

this saturday also marks the official start of the skating season for us - and although i dread all those saturday morning hours freezing my butt off at the rink, this season should be a great one ... at the very end of last season, little ladybug advanced into the much-coveted 2nd hour of group lessons.  the hour where the big kids skate (intermediate to advanced, mostly teenagers and nearly all compete in the new england circuit).  she's just ten and she's thrilled to be joining her sister and all of the older kids in that 2nd hour - it's a big deal to have left the cozy nest of the 1st hour (tots through early intermediate, mostly kids who simply learn how to skate and then leave the program).  but what does it all mean for me?  no more crowded 8:30 skating hour!  wahoo - saturdays can be all about sleeping in and hot breakfasts again!!  a double win if you ask me ;-)

this weekend is also parent-teacher conferences, which means no school for the girls either friday or monday - a four-day weekend!  do you see how it's all adding up to make a highly anticipated weekend for the ladybugs?  well, just you buckle up now ... there's also one more huge reason for the ladybugs to celebrate ... a furry, black, 7-week old, adorable, 2-pound reason ...

yes, this weekend has indeed turned into the perfect storm for the ladybugs ... a four-day weekend, skating resumes, a first bar mitzvah ... and a PUPPY?!?!

it's true ... yikes!
just hope i'll still be a functional enough 'new mom' on monday to retell the stories ...

momma bear steps back

via pinterest

in my 9/28 post, the one that finally closed the gap after my summertime blogging hiatus, i closed as i often do with a declaration about my pride when it comes to my ladybugs ... posting their 'first day of school' photo brought on the emotions.  that momma bear feeling I have with my sweet ladybug cubs.  i am just so SO darn proud of my girls - everything they do, everything they're made of, every fiber of their being - I just want to burst - they amaze me.  who are these incredible kids?!  did i have something to do with that?!

via pinterest

that pride is a wonderful feeling because for me, being a mom was really my number one objective for as long as i can remember, i'm a nurturer through and through.  as a little girl, i dressed up the family pets in doll clothes and smuggled them into my room for tea parties.  as a teenager, my first jobs were those of babysitter and camp counselor ... and since I never outgrew those jobs, i grew up to be a teacher.  so when the title of mother was gifted to me, I had arrived ...

via pinterest

as a young mother, i thrived ... the mommy and me classes, the crafts, the games, the songs, the tuck-ins at night ... and later, the carefully selected preschools and the agonizing decisions about grade placement for my ladybugs, both of whom straddle the cutoff date.  filled with energy and enthusiasm, those years were my glory days of motherhood.  then there came the heartache when my youngest went off to kindergarten.  my glory days were dimming.  i had to start letting go.  very tough for this momma bear.  it was time to begin a different phase of mothering: the schedule management, the homework help, the long cold hours of waiting in the ice rink (or piano, or girls scouts, or ...), and constant consolation and encouragement as they start to navigate the social drama of being in those 'awkward years'.

via pinterest
but my momma heart is aching again.  and it's more than the ache that comes with each september when the house gets quiet.  another 'letting go' checkpoint is upon me.  and taking that extra step back hurts.  like the first day of kindergarten all over again.  the reality is that i now have a 7th grader - a returning middle schooler who has it all under control this year.  who has a great posse of friends and an increasingly independent social calendar.  at 13, she's starting a time where her mom has far less influence and makes far fewer of her decisions.  and i also have a 5th grader - in her 'senior' year of elementary school, she's ready to spread her own wings too.  in short, these amazing girls that i once nurtured 24/7 are taking the natural steps toward independence.  which, although i know it's exactly the goal, still pulls at my heart.  because loosening the grip of my protective momma-bear arms is not easy.  but heartache or not, i have to step back and let them do more on their own.  without hovering.  without that tight bear-hug clutch i've perfected.  damn these phases of parenthood.  this letting-go nonsense is just. so. flipping. hard.

weekending ...

not sure i'll ever be able to deliver a weekending report with more punch than this one ...
would you believe it if i told you that the four of us went indoor skydiving?!

this was a christmas gift to us from the manbug last year - an adventurous surprise that we all were very excited about ... but somehow the winter ran out on us and we never cashed it in.  So by summer's end, we made it our top priority to revisit daddy's skydiving offer and set a date ...

the gift package was for 20 minutes of flying time for the four of us with an instructor - we started with 20 minutes of class time (learning hand signals for 'straighten legs', 'chin up', 'bend legs', etc) and about 10 minutes of time to gear up (jumpsuit, ear plugs, helmet, goggles, etc) and then we were ready to fly!

It's an indoor vertical wind tunnel - the instructor is with you at all times - and it feels just like floating over the strongest wind you've ever felt in your life ... so much fun!!

little ladybug got a turn too ... proof via skyventurenh.com

manbug soared the highest ... proof via skyventurenh.com

each of us got 5 minutes inside the wind tunnel - it was broken into 2 1/2 minutes of 'beginner time' for each of us to get our bearings and get familiar with the motions ... followed by another 2 1/2 minutes, which involved a flight that soared much higher because the instructor was flying with you...

still trying to figure out which of these proofs to purchase (suggestions welcome) - at $14 a pop, I need to be careful ... but what an experience this was!  Truly incredible - I think the ladybugs will be talking about their 'skydiving' adventure not just at school this week, but for all their lives ... a.m.a.z.i.n.g!

Merry Christmas, Manbug, thanks for the awesome gift ;-)
