Does anyone else out there have an "Elf on the Shelf"?

We got ours 3 years ago and he quickly became a very important and endearing part of our Christmas traditions ... we named ours "Toddy" and he's our own personal elf from the North Pole who acts as our liaison with Santa by returning to the big man's Workshop each night only to return to our house by morning, always tucked into a new perch to observe and watch over us during waking hours.
For some families we know, the Elf on the Shelf was a massive "fail" - the kids were freaked out and scared by the idea of an elf who comes to life at night. Fortunately for us, our Elf on the Shelf exceeded our every hope and both ladybugs love to wake up and search the house for Toddy ... over past years, he's been known to like lampshades, curtain rods, clocks, picture frames, bowls, and once even rode a tiny porcelain horse that was just his size ...

Did you notice the papers tucked under Toddy's arm in that first photo? Last year, our little ladybug would make Toddy little tiny-sized treasures that she felt would be useful for him ... these included a briefcase, papers, a tiny pencil, and a tiny modified ziploc baggy with 2 cheerios inside. This year, the treasures have expanded to include meals and snacks. Here is Toddy's teaspoon-sized apple pie and ice cream, which was served in the lid of a peanut butter jar ...
Toddy loved it and ate it right up! Here he is over the weekend enjoying a tiny pancake no bigger than a dime ...
I wonder how you feel about this little tradition ... is it unabashed consumerism or is it something sweet? Am I horrible for lying to my girls or will they appreciate the magic that it brought them? Whatever the answer, we love this little guy like crazy ... Toddy seems to hold the key to the magic of Christmas, I see it in my little bug's eyes each morning when she finds him in his new spot - the pure joy on her face is the most heartwarming sight you'll ever see! Thank you, dear Toddy, for giving us that gift ...

I've never seen or heard of this, but it sounds like tons of fun!!!
Why not have as much fun as you can at Christmas??
I just read about this the other day on BEYOND OUR WILDEST DREAMS blog. I had never heard of it before.
We don't have an Elf, but maybe we need to get one!!! I can think of two little ones who would love making miniature food and goodies to keep him comfortable during his visit!:)
Have fun!
Enjoy the day Sloan
I think that is an absolutely adorable tradition! We don't have one but I think my boys would love one!
Oh to have my girls at an age where this kind of magic could still happen. Enjoy every single moment!

We have "Sam." He came last Christmas. The ballerinas LOVE him! I love being able to say, "Sam's watching!" and have them jump to do what they need to.
BB writes notes to him. Then he has to write back. Sometimes he doesn't FEEL like writing back though. :(
I have thought about having him leave little treats, but everything I think will be fun has the name of a store plastered on it and BB will question me up and down about how it came from Target or wherever. :(
How cute (and somewhat creepy!) is Toddy!!! I love that the girls make him things!! If we had one I would definately use it to keep my son's behavior in check the whole month of December!
Oh, and I too still handwrite all of my Christmas cards/envelopes too! I saw your comment on Kim's blog!
yes... elf is freaking out my kiddos...last night cooper slept under his covers and Caroline wrote "do not enter" notes for her door....the thought of him flying around at night does not settle well with them....but like last year...they get use to him...i will find them talking to him, waving to him ...and they love finding him!!! I love that your girls give him food and the folded up notes he is holding is so cute!!! love love love the Christmas magic!!!
don't worry! I have older kids who now "get it" and they're just fine! Let them enjoy the magic while they're young. And I love the name Toddy!!
I had never heard of it until this year and so many people I know have it! It is too cute. I may have to go out and get one for my girl! :)
